Did you listen to a word I said?

How many times have you found your mind wandering when you were supposed to be listening? Perhaps, you were so keen to say “Oh, that happened to me as well” you forgot it wasn’t your story to tell.

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.
Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change

Next time you have to listen, really listen. You’ll soon find people tell you a lot more when they really believe you are interested in what they are saying.

The power of listening is an amazing tool.

Putting why before what… but how?

I was reading a blog by the artist Tom de Freston reflecting on a conversation he had with Allegre Hadida (Director of the MPhil Management course at Judge Business School, Cambridge University), read it here. It is about putting the WHY before the WHAT and HOW. It struck a note with me, anyone who has been in one of our workshops will know that I talk a lot about PURPOSE, and being PURPOSEFUL.

It is too easy to be led by the what or the how of activities without giving any any thought about the why. Often it throws up awkward questions – ‘Why do we do it this way?’ and the answer is: ‘Because we have always done it this way’, ‘I don’t know’, ‘Because it doesn’t upset anyone’, ‘Because it’s protocol.’ Those answers reveal a lack of purpose.

Always ask yourself, ‘Why?’ and give an honest answer. If there is no purpose in what are you doing, time for a rethink!
